Amazon to enforce EPR compliance starting in August
Starting August 18, 2025, sellers on Amazon will be required to comply with Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations in the Netherlands. This applies to categories such as batteries, packaging, and electronic equipment (WEEE).
In addition to the Netherlands, Amazon will also implement this requirement in Poland and Sweden on the same date. Bol.com appears to be following a similar path, although no official confirmation has been published yet.
Amazon moves to enforce existing EPR regulations
Amazon has informed its sellers that EPR compliance will be mandatory in several European countries, including the Netherlands, from August 18 onward. This does not involve new legislation, but rather the enforcement of existing obligations.
An important driver behind this change is the implementation of the new EU Battery Regulation, which replaces the older Batteries Directive. This new regulation tightens producer responsibility and pushes platforms like Amazon to manage legal risks. More information can be found on the European Commission’s website.
Signals from Bol.com
Bol.com has not yet released an official statement, but there are strong indications among sellers that the platform will also require EPR registration, particularly for batteries, starting August 18.
Some sellers report verbal confirmation from account managers. In addition, documentation from external partners has circulated referring to EPR obligations for the Netherlands as of that date.
Within Staxxer, Juul, an EPR specialist, has heard similar signals from multiple clients. While formal confirmation is still pending, these indications point to an upcoming policy shift.
Changing role of marketplaces
The rules for extended producer responsibility have been in place for years. Traditionally, sellers were held responsible for compliance. With the introduction of new EU regulations, marketplaces such as Amazon and Bol.com can now also be held liable if their sellers fail to comply.
As a result, these platforms are stepping up enforcement and requiring sellers to prove compliance with EPR rules. The compliance burden is thus shifting from governments to platforms, and ultimately to the seller.
Conclusion
Amazon will make EPR compliance mandatory in the Netherlands, Poland, and Sweden starting August 18, 2025. While Bol.com has not officially confirmed the same, there are strong indications that similar requirements will soon apply there as well.
Sellers are advised to verify whether their products fall under EPR categories and which obligations apply per country — including registration and reporting for batteries, packaging, and electronics.
