Kaufland expands to the Netherlands
This summer, Kaufland will launch an online marketplace in the Netherlands, as reported by Ecommerce News. The platform has been operating since 2021 and is already active in Germany, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Austria, Poland, France, and Italy. The Netherlands and Spain are joining this summer.
Kaufland is part of the Schwarz Group, the same company that owns Lidl. The platform claims to already reach 139 million online consumers. After the expansions, that number will grow to 220 million.
What does this mean for Dutch sellers?
On the marketplace, third-party sellers offer products under their own name. Orders are shipped by the seller directly.
When you register for the Dutch marketplace, you automatically gain access to all other Kaufland markets. This means that as a Dutch entrepreneur, you can sell in countries like Germany, France, Poland, and Italy all at once.
Kaufland supports this with automatic translation of product information and customer service in the local language.
Cross-border selling and VAT
As soon as you sell to consumers in other EU countries via Kaufland, the rules for distance selling apply. A single combined threshold of €10,000 per year applies across all EU countries.
If you stay below that threshold, you simply charge Dutch VAT. Once you exceed it, you are required to apply the VAT rate of the customer’s country.
Through the OSS (One Stop Shop) scheme, you can handle this centrally with a single quarterly return filed with the Dutch Tax Authority. This means you don’t need to register for VAT in each country separately.
What do you need to arrange before the launch?
Kaufland opens at the end of this summer. That gives you a few months to prepare. Think about:
- Checking whether you are already registered for the OSS scheme
- Deciding which Kaufland markets you want to sell in
- Setting up your administration to track where you are selling and to whom, per country
