In the last months of 2023, the National Tax and Customs Administration of Hungary (Nemzeti Adó és Vámhivatal, NAV) has been busy completing the project to modernize their systems for checking and filing VAT returns.
It has become clear to Hungary’s tax authorities that it is time to digitize their systems, especially as Europe slowly moves away from filing returns on paper.
The goal is to make VAT rules a lot simpler for everyone. We are moving from piles of paperwork to a process that is not only clearer and faster, but also much smoother.
What’s on the schedule?
From Jan. 1, 2024, taxpayers can access their VAT data through their online account on the NAV portal. In this, their data were collected centrally.
When can the first online returns be filed?
From February 1, 2024, monthly taxpayers will be able to file online; those who file quarterly VAT returns will be able to file online from April 1, 2024, and if you file annual VAT returns, you will have to wait a little longer. Then you can file VAT returns online through the portal from January 2025.
What exactly is changing?
Modernization allows both businesses and private taxpayers to move from the old paperwork to an online system. Here you can prepare, check and digitally submit your tax return.
To join and enjoy all the benefits of the NAV portal, all you need to do is register and create an account on the website.
With the new VAT system, you have everything in one place, from tax records of invoices issued and received to data from online cash registers.
- Getting your draft declaration ready
- Going through collected data
- Using NAV’s risk analysis tool to double-check everything
- If everything checks out, submit your tax return digitally with a few clicks
You reach the portal for online VAT returns through a user-friendly interface and machine-to-machine (M2M) communication.
For example, through an API connection, you can automatically use the data collected by NAV, prepare your return, perform a risk assessment and submit the final version. Almost everything goes by itself!
The introduction of this online process for preparing, checking, validating and filing your VAT return is going to make the whole reporting process clearer, less time-consuming and certainly more efficient.
And don’t worry, the old system of paper returns also remains. So it’s not the only way to communicate with the Internal Revenue Service, just an additional option.
